Some Research Compliance forms contain sections that have been formatted as locked Microsoft Word forms. These forms allow
input and modification to text fields and check boxes only. Spellcheck cannot be used on them.
- Text fields are indicated by shaded boxes when the document
is viewed on your computer screen. The shading does not appear on printed output.
- Text fields expand as you type or paste text into
them. The number of characters is unlimited.
- The cursor will only point to text fields and check
boxes.
- Navigate through the form by:
- Scrolling
- Using the arrow keys
- Move the cursor by:
- Using the mouse to point and click
- Using the Tab key to move the cursor to the next field
- Using the Tab-Shift keys to move the cursor to the previous field
- Some text fields start out containing default text in brackets, such as [Name]. You can delete the default text by doing any one of the following:
- Tab to the field and begin typing.
- Tab to the field and paste in desired text.
- Use the mouse to select the entire default text and then either use the
Backspace key to delete it or just type over it.
- To mark a check box, do either of the following:
- Tab to the correct check box and use the Space Bar to mark it.
- Click the correct check box with the mouse to mark it.
- To unmark a check box, do either of the following:
- Tab to marked check box and use the Space Bar to unmark it.
- Click the marked check box with the mouse to unmark it.
- The font for the text fields is pre-set to 11 point Arial and cannot be changed. Font styles, tabs, margins, and other types of formatting are not possible. When text and sections of other documents are pasted into the text fields, the paragraphs will be preserved, but most other formatting will be lost. The spell check does not function.
- If you want to use symbols (i.e., mathematical or Greek) you have several options. One is to copy the symbol from an existing Word document and paste it into the text field on the form (this will work only if the symbols in the existing document were inserted using the procedures below). Another option is to use the following procedure:
- In Microsoft Word, go to the Menu Bar and choose File and New to create a new Word document (do not use the IRB form).
- In this new, blank document, go to the Menu Bar and choose Insert.
- Choose Symbol.
- Choose the Symbols tab.
- In the Font pull-down window, choose normal text or Arial Unicode MS.
- In the Subset pull-down window, choose a subset type, such as Basic Greek or Mathematical Operators.
- Select the symbol with your cursor and then click the Insert button. The symbol will appear in the document.
- In the document, select the symbol you just pasted in. Then copy it (Ctrl c) and paste (Ctrl v) it into the text field in your IRB form.
- Where applicable, if more space is needed in one of the tables, additional rows can be added or the entire table can be copied and pasted. Where appropriate, the completed table may be pasted into new forms so that the entire table will not have to be re-typed (just be sure to edit it for any changes).
- Save your work frequently.
