A research team led by the University of South Florida’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neurosciences has found that a fragment of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) — known as sAPP-α and associated with Alzheimer’s disease — appears to regulate its own production. The finding may lead to ways to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease by controlling the regulation of APP.

USF Study Finds Immediate Skull Reconstruction After Traumatic Brain Injury Worsens Brain Damage

Immediate skull reconstruction following trauma that penetrates or creates an indentation in the skull can aggravate brain damage inflicted by the initial injury, a study by a University of South Florida research team reports. Using a rat model for moderate and severe traumatic brain injury, the researchers also showed that a delay of just two days in the surgical repair of skull defects resulted in significantly less brain swelling and damage.

Nancy Romero-Daza and David Himmelgreen have been awarded a three-year Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant from the National Science Foundation, for a total of $418,611. Yeatman, M.D., as CASIS Interim Chief Scientist. Additionally, Dr. Alan Stern, a planetary scientist, aerospace consultant, and former NASA executive, has been appointed CASIS Scientific Advisor. Doctors Yeatman and Stern will lead research initiatives for the organization.
