Research Into Current State of Policing
University of South Florida criminology professor Lorie Fridell is part of a team funded by the National Institute of Justice to evaluate the current state of American policing. NIJ awarded $1.8 million to the University of Illinois at Chicago for the project, and USF and Northeastern University are the two major university partners.
Researcher Discovers Chemical Pollution In Brains of Beached Marine Animals
A University of South Florida researcher has found contamination from PCBs, the residue of long-ago used DDT, and common flame retardant chemical in the brains and cerebrospinal fluid of marine mammals in a new study which raises concerns about the potential impact hazardous chemicals have on ocean life.
USF to Build Largest Comprehensive Energy Smart Grid in Southeast
The University of South Florida’s Power Center for Utility Explorations and Progress Energy Florida have been selected by Florida’s Energy and Climate Commission to build the largest and most comprehensive smart grid in the Southeast, serving at least 5,000 customers on the west side of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach.

Weight Loss In Old Age May Signal Dementia
Older people who are thinner or are losing weight quickly are at a higher risk of developing dementia, especially if they started out overweight or obese, a new study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of South Florida and the University of Washington found.
Space Neuroscience Research: Astronaut-Physician Visits USF
Astronaut-physician Dr. Jay Buckey Jr, toured the Hyperbaric laboratory of USF Health's Dr. Jay Dean during a visit here May 6. Dr. Buckey was a payload specialist for the Neurolab Space Mission, which provided an indepth look at how a basic natural force, gravity, can profoundly affect the nervous system.
Citizen-Scientists Sought For Climate Study

College of Marine Science Students Garner Top Honors
Two students at USF’s College of Marine Science have won top awards for their presentations at national and international conferences while the Marine Science Advisory Committee won the 2008-09 Outstanding Student Organization Award at the Celebration of University Leadership Ceremony.

Literature Scholar Named USF Distinguished University Professor
A world-renowned literature scholar is honored as the 2009 Distinguished University Professor at the University of South Florida. Dr. John Patrick William Rogers was selected from the university’s top faculty for this annual recognition, which is USF’s highest faculty honor for scholarly achievements as a researcher and instructor. Dr. Rogers will have his title formally bestowed at the Fall 2009 Faculty Honors and Awards Ceremony.
Levine Receives 2009 Fulbright Fellowship
Alex Levine, PhD, associate professor of philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences has received a 2009 Fulbright Fellowship to visit the University of Buenos Aires this summer.
