The University encourages faculty members to consider ways in which the results of their research may best be disseminated and made available for the public good. To facilitate the patenting and licensing of inventions developed under University auspices, USF established the Division of Patents & Licensing (DPL).

The primary goals of this office are to facilitate the distribution of research results through commercial development and to generate revenue that will reward inventors for their creativity and support further research and other educational programs at the University.

DPL's team approach provides faculty with dedicated individuals possessing the educational background and specialized training to assist with questions related to the protection and licensing of intellectual property.
