Division
of Comparative Medicine
“…contributing
to a greater reverence for life.”

Certification
of Research Personnel
Personnel
who work with animals must be certified
by the IACUC.
New Investigators must submit a copy of their curriculum vitae
to Comparative Medicine (MDC 20), telephone 974-9796, fax 974-9432.
All research personnel must complete a Health and Risk Assessment
for Employee Safety in the Care and Use of Animals form, linked
below. This completed Health form must be presented at the start of the Facility Orientation session.
All research personnel must complete
a Request for the Orientation and Certification of New Research
Personnel Using Animals, linked below . This completed Orientation form must be presented at the start of the Facility Orientation session.
Facility Orientation Session: After completing the forms, new research personnel should contact the local facility manager so that a general orientation, and protocol-specific, and/or species-specific
training can be arranged.
NOTE - Forms described above must be completed prior to the start of the Facility Orientation Session. - NOTE
During orientation,
Comparative Medicine Division facility managers and training coordinators will complete the
forms linked below:
Field and Wildlife Research Orientation: Field study participants
should receive certification. Electronic orientation, rather than face-to-face
meeting, is a more relevant and expeditious method of orientation for
personnel conducting field studies. Use this link, "Orientation
of Field & Wildlife Research Staff," to complete this
process.

Student Teaching Laboratories/Classes: IACUC applications describing teaching or training laboratories must assure the IACUC in writing that they or their designated IACUC-certified staff will continually directly supervise the students, and that prior to the lab commencing, will discuss with the students the potential risks and hazards associated with their involvement in the laboratory involving animals. All attending students will then complete a Student Safety in Teaching Laboratories Involving Animals form, which the PI will sign and provide to Comparative Medicine before the lab commences.
Controlled Substances: Personnel requesting, possessing,
or using any controlled substance in research or teaching must be registered
with Comparative Medicine using a Certification of Research Personnel
Using Controlled Substances form, linked below.
Annual
Re-Certification of Research Personnel

allow access to the ALL
courses and self-examinations, submit a request to Compmed@research.usf.edu.
The request should include your first name, last

Training is required prior to approval of all animal protocols and annually thereafter. The training is available from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Learning Library (ALL). To be issued/assigned an ALL account, which will allow access to the ALL courses and self-examinations, submit a request to VHATAMIACUCtraining@va.gov The request should include your first name, last name, and e-mail address you wish to use for the ALL.

The second training is the module associated with the species of research animal that is being used. If more than one species is being used by a research team, then more than one species module will have to be completed (by each member of the team), e.g., “Introduction to Mice” and “Introduction to Rats”.
