Shipping,
Relocating, or Reassigning Animals
The transportation of animals, including intra-institutional transportation, should occur only when essential since any transit time introduces risks of exposure to environmental extremes, crowding, infectious agents, and possible zoonoses, which can affect animal and public welfare, and the consistency of results. Movement of animals within animal housing rooms is discouraged.
Movement of Animals (Other Than Locally Produced Mice): The movement of animals other than locally produced mice between animal housing rooms of a single facility, or between separate facilities requires the approval of the Program Coordinator of Comparative Medicine, telephone 974-9876. Complete the Request to Relocate Research Animals form, linked below.
Request to Relocate Research Animals
Reassignment of Animals (Other Than Locally Produced Mice) to Another Protocol: Animals are eligible for transfer from one IACUC-approved research use to another if they are naïve with respect to major medical, surgical, research or teaching uses. Transfer of unused animals from one IACUC-approved research use (excluding local mouse production, see below) to another is permitted only when justified in writing and approved by both the originating and reassigned Principal Investigators, and the Program Coordinator, telephone 974-9876. An approved reassignment of naïve animals from one IACUC-approved research protocol to another becomes effective on the date of the transfer, and all animal per diem, identifying cards, and inventories are changed by the animal care staff to reflect this reassignment. To request a transfer of animals to a new IACUC-approved protocol, complete the form linked below.
Request to Reassign Research Animals
Movement or Reassignment of Locally Produced Mice: Mice are eligible for transfer from an IACUC-approved Application to Establish/Maintain a Mouse Colony protocol to an Application for the Use of Animals in Research protocol if they are naïve with respect to major medical, surgical, research or teaching uses. Transfer of locally produced mice to an IACUC-approved research use is permitted after the research staff notifies the Facility Manager with sufficient information so that the Facility Manager can complete a Request to Reassign Locally Produced Mice to a Research Protocol form, linked below. If the reassignment necessitates a physical change in housing location, the Facility Manager must secure approval from the Comparative Medicine Program Coordinator 974-9876 prior to the movement of mice. Once approved, the animal care staff appropriately alters all per diem, identifying cards, and inventories regarding the reassignment, effective on the date of transfer. Please provide the Facility Manager with sufficient information regarding the request so that they can complete the Request to Reassign Locally Produced Mice to a Research Protocol form, linked below.
