Registration for 2009 BioSafety Course

One-time completion is mandatory.

Annual attendance in an approved Biosafety Training course is required for all Principal Investigators, staff, and/or graduate/undergraduate students who use/store recombinant DNA, infectious agents, select agents, and biological toxins or who work in a laboratory where these materials are used/stored.

This core Biosafety Training Course is a one-time requirement for those who have not completed it previously. However, it can be repeated in subsequent years to meet the annual requirement for continuing education.

Course Description

The training curriculum consists of three modules:

1.  OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens

This course discusses the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standard for Bloodborne Pathogens, 29 CFR 1910.1030. It covers the Standard Precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other bloodborne pathogens. An overview of treatment interventions is also presented.

2.  Principles and Practices of Biosafety

This course covers the basics of risk assessment and identification, biosafety containment assignments, microbiological practices, and emergency response. Detailed discussions of the facilities, equipment, and practices necessary to conduct research at Biosafety Level 2 are also included. The course covers general biosafety issues, and does not replace requirements for supervisors to train or make certain employees are trained in the use of biohazardous materials in the workplace.
