MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Internal Awards Program is to foster excellence in research and scholarship by USF faculty and support activities aimed at securing extramural funding. In the allocation of funds across program categories, the highest priority is given to initiatives aimed at funding activities likely to enable leveraging for additional extramural funding and to initiatives aimed at scholarly activities for which availability of extramural funding is extremely limited.
The Selection Process: How it Works

The Internal Awards Program typically is administered in two cycles annually through the Division of Sponsored Research (DSR). Among other things, the grant programs are designed to help prepare faculty for the rigors of the external proposal review process, hence their deadlines and policies are strictly enforced. The Conference Support Grants were designed to foster excellence in research and creative activity at USF. Conferences are an important part of the research and creative process because they provide a venue for the dissemination of new information and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. Therefore, the Conference Support program provides supplemental funding for the planning and implementation of national and international conferences in order to enhance the research and creative environment at USF and to bring prestige and recognition to the University and the State of Florida. The Creative Scholarship Grants were designed for eligible faculty working in the Fine Arts and Humanities, disciplines where significant external funding is not typically available. Funds for this grant program are derived from Indirect Cost revenues generated by externally funded grants awarded to USF faculty. The Established Researcher Grants were created for faculty who have been employed in teaching and/or research at USF for more than three years and who are attempting to shift into new areas of research. The program's goal is to provide support for faculty to launch productive new programs of research, scholarship, exhibition or performance that will ultimately result in intellectual productivity, published research and successful grant proposals to agencies or foundations. Funded from indirect cost revenues generated by externally funded grants, the grants will fund pilot, draft or preliminary studies that will lead to published research, scholarship or juried creative endeavors. It is expected that these results will provide the basis for external grant proposals and publication or exhibition of the results. A proposal plan (including funding source, type of grant and application deadline) and a publication/exhibition plan (including name and address of journals/venues, submission deadlines) must be submitted as part of the application for Established Researcher Grants. Funded from indirect cost revenues generated by externally funded grants, this program is designed to provide financial support for scholarly/artistic presentations by USF faculty at major professional meetings/conferences outside the USA. The primary goal of the program in its current form is to enhance the visibility and prestige of the University. The Grant Training Awards program is designed to improve the competitiveness of extramural grant proposals submitted by USF faculty by allowing faculty to participate in proposal writing workshops, training sessions, etc. Support for this participation can take the form of partial summer salary, tuition, travel and accommodations (if necessary). Ideally, such a grant-training course would be organized at USF, and these awards would allow for some salary support for the researchers, especially new researchers, to participate. The use of one this award can also be to attend external grant writing programs, such as the ones held at the National Institutes of Health. It is the expectation that at least one external grant proposal will be submitted to the Division of Sponsored Research within one year of the workshop/training program for which a grant training award is received. The Interdisciplinary Research Development Grant program is a pilot project funded from indirect cost revenues generated by externally funded grants. The Grants were created to stimulate interdisciplinary research collaboration and the exploration of innovative ideas. The term “interdisciplinary” can be loosely defined to include faculty from different departments within a single USF college or across USF colleges/schools, or USF faculty in collaboration with faculty in different disciplines at other universities. The Principal Investigator (PI) and at least 50% of the co-investigators must be employed by USF. The proposal must clearly demonstrate that co-investigators from other institutions contribute unique and necessary perspectives, skills, or backgrounds unavailable at USF. The goal of this grant is to lay the foundation for large-scale external grant applications, in particular, large multi-study grants, such as center grants, program project grants and training grants. The Grants will fund pilot, draft or preliminary studies or projects as well as the multifaceted planning necessary to organize such an effort. Consequently, a proposal plan (including funding source, type of grant and application deadline) must be submitted as part of the application for an Interdisciplinary Research Development Grant. The New Researcher Grants were created for faculty who are new to USF and do not have established funding sources (external or college/departmental). The program's goal is to launch productive programs of research, scholarship, exhibition or performance that will ultimately result in successful grant proposals to agencies or foundations. Funded from indirect cost revenues generated by externally funded grants, the Grants will fund pilot, draft or preliminary studies/projects that will lead to published research/scholarship. It is expected that these results will provide the basis for external grant proposals and publication or exhibition of the result. Consequently, a proposal plan (including funding source, type of grant and application deadline) and a publication plan (including name and address of potential publishers and submission deadlines, when appropriate) must be submitted as part of the application for New Researcher Grants. President Judy Genshaft invites USF faculty members to submit proposals for the Presidential Young Faculty Awards for research, instruction or service-related activities. The purpose of these awards is to provide faculty with additional opportunities for professional development, scholarship, or service. Author of proposals judged to be the most meritorious will be granted awards in amounts of $10,000 each. Two awards will be grants. The funds for these awards are provided by the USF Foundation, with equal matching funds by the Office of Research. IMPORTANT: Only one PYFA proposal may be submitted per cycle. In addition, if the investigator receives other Internal Award funding for the same scope of work s/he must forfeit one of the two awards.
